2.71 – Slices of Life

02.71 SS01

The android looked up from the phone in his hands. Ever since he’d been given the device, he’d been mesmerised by it. Mal wouldn’t be surprised if Steve ended up asking him to install some apps in that cybernetic brain of his. Would that even be possible? He’d have to look into it later, just in case.

“Yes, Mr Centauri?”

“Would you like to come out with me today? I have the day off, and I need to get some shopping done.”

“I would like that. However, I am concerned that I would draw attention. I do not want to make people angry.”

“It’s ok, we’re going to Magnolia Promenade. It’s a safe zone.”

Steve paused for a moment, a thoughtful look crossing his face. “In that case, I would be happy to accompany you.”

02.71 SS02

“I’m glad! We can get you some new clothes, too. You can’t wear Lor’s hand-me-downs forever.”

“I do not mind.”

“Come on, humour me. You should have a few things of your own.”

Steve smiled, and Malik relaxed. He was slowly getting used to having the other man… android… mandroid? No, that was just silly. Steve’s behaviour was growing more and more sim-like every day – it was sometimes easy to forget how different he was.

“Thank you. I would like that.”

“Right, I’ll meet you outside in… say, half an hour? I need to get ready.”

“I will tell Lor where we are going.”

02.71 SS03

“Lor? Your husband is taking me shopping.” “Have fun! I’ll probably be at work when you get back, so I’ll see you this evening.” “I will attempt to have fun.”

That was unnerving. Steve looked around, taking in the sights. The unknown entity should not trouble him in a ‘safe zone’, after all.

02.71 SS04

“This was my favourite shop when I was a teen.” “Did you buy a lot?” “Nah, I couldn’t afford any of it. It was fun to pretend, though.”

02.71 SS05

“Ahhhhh~ It’s just how I remembered.”

02.71 SS06

“What do I do here?” “Just try on anything you like the look of.”

02.71 SS07

“I like this. It suits my shape.” “Right, lets put them on the list. It’s always good to have some solid colours to mix and match with.” “…” “Do as I say, not as I do.”

02.71 SS08

“What do you think?” “It looks very smart.”

Steve stopped in front of the mannequin. He didn’t know much about clothes, but he knew a nice jacket when he saw one. It would need some adjustments.

“May I try this on?”

02.71 SS09

The salesperson stepped out from behind the counter. “I’m sorry, sir, but that’s a women’s jacket.”

“I do not mind.”

“I mean,” the woman hastened to add. “it’s not made for your physique. Your shoulders are very…” she waved vaguely with her hands, “…wide. I don’t think we have a size that could work with that.”

“I see.” He scanned the material. It had very little stretch potential – the shop assistant was correct. It was a shame he did not know how to sew. Maybe the internet had some advice.

1,000,000,000+ HITS

He bookmarked a few likely looking sites. That would keep him occupied while his body was in stasis at night.

02.71 SS10

Next shop!

02.71 SS11

This one’s a bit less fancy. It looks more like a sports shop, actually.

02.71 SS12

“I do not believe this colour suits me.” “…it’s not the best colour, no. Maybe try something warmer?” “This is made of wool.”

02.71 SS13

“Can I help you?” “Actually, yes. Do you sell ultra-durable boxing gloves? My son’s worn his down completely.” “Right this way.”

02.71 SS14

“Is this better?” “Much better! It looks really good on you.” “I like the material. It is soft.”

02.71 SS15

“Do you want to wear it out?” “Can I?” “Sure. I’ll just pay.”

02.71 SS16

“Will you be needing a bag?” “No, thank you.”

“You were right, Mr Centauri. No one has made any remarks about my appearance. The lady in the first shop… her pulse was slightly faster when she saw me properly, but she did not comment. You would not guess that they have never seen an android before.”

“You can call me Malik, Steve. I’m relieved it’s gone so smoothly, actually. ”

Steve turned to face him. “You were worried?”

Malik ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. “Honestly? Yeah, a little bit. I mean, I know that it’s safe in theory, but there’s always a chance that someone will decide to mess around anyway. Lor only comes here when he needs to.”

“What about the rest of your family?”

“Well, Ly is under neighbourhood arrest at the moment, so she hasn’t got a choice. I know Ellie comes here quite a bit to pick up spare parts and gym equipment. I’ve seen Leo here once or twice, but he doesn’t seem too interested. As for Shea, the next shop is her favourite. I think you’ll like it.”

He didn’t mention Altair. Perhaps this was one of those ‘it goes without saying’ moments that he had read about. If it was, then he probably should not make him say it.

02.71 SS17

“What is this place?” “It’s a second hand shop.” “I have two hands already. I do not see why I should need more.” “…was that a joke?” “That depends. Was it funny?”

02.71 SS18

“Lor has one of these on his desk at work.” “He does?” “Yes. It is comforting to see another one.”

02.71 SS19

“They are tiny versions of me.” “Would you like one?” “Yes, please.”

“You are very generous.”

Malik grinned. “Honestly, I enjoy doing things like this. I don’t normally get the opportunity.”

“I cannot pretend to fully understand the appeal, but you do seem happy. One day I will try to experience it myself.”

02.71 SS20

“Well, think about it this way. Imagine that you’ve grown up with very little. You’ve had to live without anything that isn’t essential, or make it yourself.”

“Well, one day that changes. You end up able to provide for yourself and have some extra money. You don’t need to worry anymore. You see other people in the same position you were in and you can do something about it. If you’ve wanted to do things for people for a long time, and now you finally can… well, it feels wonderful.”

02.71 SS21

“I see. I had not thought of it that way.”

Lor had been right, Mal admitted. There was definitely more than a pre-programmed personality in that head of his. Perhaps generosity wasn’t logical in the way that a machine would approve of, but Steve had managed to see past that.

“We’ve got a bit of time before we need to catch the bus home. Do you want to look around a bit more? There’s a park just across the road.”

“Yes, please.”

02.71 SS22

“What is that?”

02.71 SS23

“It’s a fountain. Pretty isn’t it?”

02.71 SS24

“It is beautiful.”

02.71 SS25

Come back from shopping to find that Leo’s been baking again. What a guy!

02.71 SS26

Meanwhile the other kids are having a nice long afternoon boogie session. Ly still isn’t smiling like she used to, but it’s good to see her on the floor again!

02.71 SS27

Lor, love? You’re beginning to show again. It might be best for you to break out that Sixan jumpsuit again – restricting clothes can’t be comfortable for you or the nooboo(s).

02.71 SS28

Lyra approves of this dish. She’s a glutton, so she approves of every dish, but still – that is one satisfied teenager. Shea’s the foodie, so she’s the real test.

02.71 SS29

Cookies + eyeliner = definitely in pregnant mode again

02.71 SS30

“Did you two have fun?” “Yes, thank you. It was interesting. Malik is very kind.”

02.71 SS31

Speaking of Mal, he still never turns down a chance to beat the kids at video games. His reputation as a pro-gamer must be upheld!

02.71 SS32

Steve’s room is looking a little more personalised. Who knows what will be added next?

When he had asked for something to do, Steve had been hoping for this outcome. However, now that it had happened he had to admit that he was at a loss. How, exactly, did gardening work?

He knew the theory, of course. Plants + water – weeds – bugs = harvestables. But how much water? How would he know which bits were weeds.

02.71 SS33

Steve walked up and down the length of the garden, scanning each plant individually. This was his first taste of responsibility in this new life – he wanted to prove he could deal with it.

02.71 SS34

I must not let the Death Flowers die.

The idea that, other than Lyra, he was alone in the house was a strange sensation after such a busy few weeks. The young woman was friendly enough, but she was a lot quieter without her siblings. She spent a lot of time in the office, sending and receiving postcards from places far away. It made sense. It would be the nearest to travelling that she could hope to get.

He checked his internal clock. It would be another three hours before anyone returned. Perhaps it would be a good time to work on his survival skills.

02.71 SS35

Lor has managed to convert one of his jumpsuits to keep water out completely. As long as Steve keeps his head above the water, he can swim! Well, theoretically. The actual swimming needs work. We don’t want soggy circuits!

02.71 SS36

Is that who I think it is?

02.71 SS37

It’s Ellie!

02.71 SS38

Oooh, I think that’s the girl from the sports store.

02.71 SS39

Maybe she wasn’t just going to Magnolia promenade for gym equipment after all! Look at that smile~

02.71 SS40

Still, no wonder she wasn’t too shocked when she met Steve. She’s probably used to unusual happenings if she’s been hanging out with Ellie.

02.71 SS41

It’s the TRIPLE BIRTHDAY day!! Much glowing is happening. Al’s glowing…

02.71 SS42

Leo made the birthday cake, so he’s glowing…

02.71 SS43

Ly… well, she doesn’t glow very often anymore, but she’s smiling.

02.71 SS44

Mal bought the jacket Steve liked online, but in a colour that will suit him. Turns out, he’s pretty handy with a needle! I wonder if he made those trousers he had as a teen… you know the ones.

02.71 SS45

Yay! Ellie and Otis have arrived!

02.71 SS46

Yari, looking as beautiful as ever. Finally they’ll both be the same life-stage again!

02.71 SS47

Al couldn’t wait for me to get a screencap of him blowing out his candles, so he gets a horn to the face. Because Lor.

02.71 SS48

First thing he does is autonomously hug Yari. Awwww ❀

02.71 SS49

Leo, for a nice change, was patient. He gets a nice photo.

02.71 SS50

Did his shoulders get broader? Something has changed, definitely.

02.71 SS51

Ly’s turn! Even the mixologist is joining in the festivities. She should be doing her job, but we can let it slide when cake is involved.

02.71 SS52

So, we have Shea, Otis, Ellie, Ly and Leo. Someone is missing…

02.71 SS53

There he is, the sap.

02.71 SS54

I tease, but they’re adorable really.

02.71 SS55

I’m glad Otis has stayed in touch with the family even after Ellie moved out. He’s a sweetie.

For once, Altair wasn’t nervous. There was no need to second guess himself where Yaritza was concerned. No one expected him to do this, but he wanted to. She deserved everything he could give her.

The past few months hadn’t been easy for her. Her mother had passed away, and her own health was beginning to take a turn for the worse. Mental illness really did run strong in the Vaughan female genes. Whether it was the death that had triggered it or it had just become more noticeable since, he wasn’t sure. All he knew was that he wanted to stay with her regardless.

That was why he had brought her here tonight.

02.71 SS5602.71 SS5702.71 SS58

There was nothing to worry about. They would look after each other, in sickness and in health.

A/N – So, this ended up being more of a clip show style chapter than I’d initially planned. It takes place over the space of about six months, with Lor’s pregnancy progressing and Steve getting used to his new home. Things are changing, and soon it will be time for Generation 3! Just a couple of chapters left…

Not sure if I’m more excited or sad about that, really.

Oh! The YA traits for the kids are as follows:

Al – Romantic
Leo – Family Orientated
Lyra – Ambitious

Steve’s first penpal letter will be up shortly. Also, I have a few shots that I liked but didn’t make it into the chapter, so here you go:

  1. Aw this chapter was too cute I can’t wait to see how Steve interacts with his pen pal! Also all the potential heirs are all grown up I wonder who take over for Gen 3 not that it matters they’ll all will have interesting stories to tell!❀️

    • The first penpal letter will be up soon πŸ™‚ He’s really loving his new life! Everything is new and exciting.
They’ll all have their own stories, even if not as the heir. I have little plots cooked up for them that will weave into the main one πŸ™‚

    • I love that I can choose their last trait – I picked them based on their actions in their teen years, so Al could really only be Romantic XD Leo is just so loyal to his family, so his was pretty easy, too. Lyra’s was the hardest – but then I realised that almost everything that has happened to her has been because of her ambition, so I picked Ambitious for her πŸ™‚

Had to get the jacket for Steve! I was so annoyed that he couldn’t try it on at the shop, so that was a CAS thing when I got back πŸ™‚

  2. Aww, the shopping trip was the best! I love seeing Steve exploring his way around the shops and trying on all the clothes. Mal was such a delight to read about too. He’s so generous and kind and supportive. And yay for robot lamps! ❀ πŸ™‚

*hugs pregnant!Lor* He's so adorable eating the cookies. ❀ And well done, Leo! A man who can bake definitely earns lots of brownie points with me. (Pun definitely intended.)

Steve looks amazing in that jacket he tailored to fit himself! Give the mandroid a motorbike and the biker look is complete. πŸ˜€

Happy birthday to these three! They've come such a long way. I love how enthusiastic Lor is about celebrating – poor Al, I wonder if he can still hear properly after that. xD

Huge congratulations to Al and Yari! ❀ Aww, I'm so happy for them.

    • Steve had fun! I admit, the shops were the ones that come with the pack, so the clothes were a bit dull, but they had fun! Mal loves being able to treat people now.

Lor is happiest when pregnant, I’m pretty sure =p Especially with a son who can bake for him!

Mal s handy with a needle, that’s for sure. He’ll have to teach Steve!

I can’t believe they’re young adults now, I might cry! It was a very fun, busy party πŸ™‚

      • For Steve, I’m sure it’s a world of fun! And it’s amazing seeing him enter and interact with such a familiar setting! Makes everything new. πŸ™‚

He’s such a broody bird. Love him. ❀

Those two will host the Great Newcrest Stitch Off. (Mel and Sue, step aside!)

Time sure flies! I'm so proud of all of them! ❀

        YIPPEE! πŸ˜€
